MT-15 Overview

The all-new Yamaha MT-15 has been a long-anticipated model and brings the practicality of a street-fighter while sporting the performance of the R15. In fact, the underpinnings on both motorcycles remain the same, giving more options to customers, choosing between the track-focussed aggression of the R15 and the upright yet sporty styling of the MT-15. Priced at Rs. 1.36 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi), the new Yamaha street-fighter is only Rs. 3,000 cheaper than the R15, but manages to stand out amidst a host of offerings including the KTM 125 Duke, Bajaj Pulsar NS 200 and the TVS Apache RTR 200 4V.

The Yamaha MT-15 not only manages to bring freshness to the segment but also to the brand's line-up in terms of design. It is by far the boldest yet from the manufacturer and follows the design language seen on bigger models like the MT-09 and the MT-10. The styling is aggressive and garners a lot of road presence thanks to the twin slot daytime running lights and a single LED headlight in the centre. The transformer-like face is hard to miss and is further complemented by the sculpted fuel tank with radiator shrouds and a plastic belly pan. The step-up single-piece seat looks more contoured and more comfortable too with the extended tail section that houses the LED taillight.

The instrument panel has been borrowed from the new YZF-R15 V3.0 and gets a negative LCD display. The unit comes with a digital speedometer, bar-style tachometer above, and a fuel gauge along with ABS warning lamp. There's also the odometer, Trip 1, Trip 2 and clock, as well as the gear shift light indicator and VVA indicator.

With respect to power, the Yamaha MT-15 uses the same 155 cc single-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine as the R15 with the Variable Valve Actuation (VVA) technology. The motor belts out 19 bhp at 10,000 rpm and 14.7 Nm of peak torque at 8,500 rpm, while paired with a 6-speed gearbox with an assist and slipper clutch as standard. The top speed on the MT-15 is rated at 118 kmph.

Underpinned by the Deltabox frame, the MT-15 is suspended by telescopic forks up front with 130 mm travel and a monoshock unit at the rear with 97 mm travel. Braking performance comes from a single 282 mm disc at the front and a 220 mm disc at the rear. The bike comes with single-channel ABS as standard. The bike rides on 100/80 R17 tyre at the front, whereas the rear uses a 140/70 R17 unit.
